  48. With versions of the OS before 2.1 Commodore supplied text-to-speech
  49. software on the Workbench discs. This library replaces the Commodore
  50. supplied translator library. The origional translates text to phonemes
  51. for use with the narrator device. It is used in software with speech
  52. output such as "Say" and "Term".
  53.  
  54. Unfortunately for non-American users the origional library translates
  55. all text as if it were American English. It can not handle other
  56. languages or dialects.

  58. This library is a drop-in replacement and works with all software that
  59. currently uses the Commodore speech system.  With this version of
  60. translator library (version 42.0) the user can specify which language
  61. the translator should use.  The following languages/dialects/accents
  62. are supported by this library:

  65.     American
  66.     Italiano
  67.     Cymraeg
  68.     Maori
  69.     Suomi

  71. Not all useful I know. However it is not difficult to write
  72. translation files for other languages with the exception of languages
  73. like English and French which have more exceptions than most.  I hope
  74. that users of this system will be motivated to create accent
  75. description files for the language(s) they speak.

  78. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
  79.  
  80. Requires any version of the OS greater than 1.3.  Some features are
  81. not supported on pre-2.04 systems and systems without the locale
  82. library.

  84. To be of any practical use it requires any version of the narrator
  85. device and software that talks.
